Robinho Instructed To Serve Nine Years In Brazil Prison For Rape

Ex-Manchester City and Brazil star Robinho has been told by judges that he must serve his nine-year sentence for rape in Brazil. Robinho received a sentence in Italy in 2017 for his part in a group sexual assault of a woman during his time at AC Milan in 2013. However, Brazil does not extradite its own nationals, which led Italy to campaign for his imprisonment in his home country. Judges in Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice voted 9-2 in favor of instructing the former Real Madrid star to serve his sentence in Brazil. One of the judges, Francisco Falcao noted that Robinho should serve the sentence in order to avoid diplomatic tensions between Italy and Brazil. Robinho’s lawyer Jose Eduardo Alckmin told the court that the 40-year-old wanted a retrial in Brazil on grounds of national sovereignty. Robinho can appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, with the Brazilian insisting that the encounter with the woman was “consensual”.
