A very popular tourist spot in the south of France is believed to have taken the debate around tipping culture to a whole new level. St. Tropez, a destination beloved by the rich and famous, has developed a new policy when it comes to booking a table at a restaurant. In some St. Tropez restaurants, staff were found to have kept note of those who visited, and how much they tipped. Those who fail to leave a substantial tip might find it difficult to reserve another table, as staff may have banned them from the restaurant. The new scheme has been likened to racketeering or extortion by St. Tropez mayor Sylvie Sire, calling these practices ‘detestable.’ "We are a long way from the essence of a tip, representing customer satisfaction", said Sylvie Sire, Mayor of St. Tropez. She also noted how prices in the area are already on the rise, forcing many residents to be driven out of the coastal town.
