Heated Yoga Could Help Treat Severe Depression

00:01:05

Heated yoga, or hot yoga, could be considered as a potential treatment for moderate to severe depression, according to researchers. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found promise regarding the positive effects of Bikram yoga, a type of heated yoga. Half of the 80 participants, all of whom suffer from depression, took part in the heated yoga over a period of eight weeks. The findings by Massachusetts General Hospital discovered those who took part experienced an improvement in depressive symptoms. 44% of participants were deemed in remission with an overall 50% reduction in depressive symptoms recorded. The heat is said to counteract inflammation, a potential contributor to depression and help thermoregulate your body. Those who are well-versed in the practice advise those considering partaking in heated yoga to consult with their doctor before making a decision.
