Have you ever had a song get stuck in your head? Well, you’re not alone. Research has found this to be very common, naming the persistent mind melodies as an ‘earworm.’ Although scientists haven’t understood why exactly certain songs get stuck in our heads, they have found that certain songs are likely to do so than others. Western Washington University Psychologist Ira Hyman has said that “some people wander around with music in their head kind of constantly.” A particular situation, word, or sound that reminds you of a specific song can then cause that song to be an earworm, according to Callula Killingly, an earworm expert. Musical elements like tempo and sustained notes (such as in Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’) are likely to make a song stick in your head for longer. How often we hear a song can also contribute to it sticking in our heads, such as those pesky viral TikTok songs that loop endlessly. Dr. Hyman notes that earworms are more common when the mind is unoccupied, so tasks like doing the dishes often lead to songs looping in your head. Researchers have found that chewing gum, social interactions, or trying to replace the song with one you don’t mind, are effective ways to ‘unstick’ a song from your mind.
