Rafael Nadal To Retire From Tennis At End Of 2024 Season

00:01:34

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced that he will retire from the sport at the end of the 2024 season. Nadal, who had previously indicated that he would retire at the year’s end, will represent Spain in his final professional appearance at next month’s Davis Cup. “I am here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis. The reality is that it has been some difficult years, the last two especially. I don't think I have been able to play without limitations. I think it's the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could ever have imagined,” said Rafael Nadal. Nadal had missed most of the 2023 season with a hip injury, sparking rumors that the 38-year-old would call time on his over two-decade career. The 22-time Grand Slam winner returned to competitive action in Brisbane in January before suffering a thigh injury and being sidelined until the clay court season. Following a first-round defeat at the French Open, Nadal featured at Roland Garros again at the Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round. Nadal, who is nicknamed the ‘King of Clay’, finished his career with a record 14 French Open titles, winning 112 of his 116 games at Roland Garros. The Spaniard has also captured four US Open titles and has won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice to end his career as the second-most successful men’s single player ever. Nadal has also won Olympic singles and doubles gold and has led Spain to five Davis Cup titles, with his final appearance at the event commencing on November 19.
