Coco Gauff’s US Open Defense Ended By Navarro

00:01:14

Coco Gauff’s US Open defense ended after she was defeated by Emma Navarro in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows in New York. Gauff, who entered the tournament as the third seed, recorded 19 double faults, including 11 in the third set, to lose 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to fellow American Navarro. Gauff was beaten convincingly by Navarro at Wimbledon earlier this year after “collapsing” mentally, but intended to maintain her focus this time around. However, the 20-year-old’s 60 unforced errors and underperforming serve, including three double-faults in the final game, proved decisive. “I just didn't take care of my serve, so that was the biggest difference. Mentally and emotionally I gave it my all. Of course, there were things execution-wise, where I wish I could serve better. I think if I had done that, it would have been a different story for me in the match,” said Coco Gauff. The defeat ends Gauff’s attempt to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2024 to win back-to-back US Open titles. Navarro, who will play Paula Bardosa in the quarterfinal, becomes the first American to reach the last eight at Wimbledon and the US Open since Williams in 2004.
