United States tennis star Coco Guaff has announced her split with coach Brad Gilbert following her fourth-round exit at the US Open. Gauff, who was coached by Gilbert for 14 months, was unable to defend her 2023 title and lost to eventual semifinalist Emma Navarro at Flushing Meadows. The 20-year-old was disappointed with her performance, which consisted of recording 19 double faults and clocking 60 unforced errors. “Thanks to Coco Gauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort. Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career,” said Brad Gilbert on X. Gauff responded with her own post and thanked her former coach, noting, “We had an incredible run and I wish you all the best in the future!” The former world number one hired Gilbert after her exit at Wimbledon last year, with Gauff going on to win 18 of her next 19 matches during the hard court season. Gauff’s remarkable run culminated with her US Open win in New York, where she came back from a set down to beat this year’s winner, Aryna Sabalenka.
