Dominic Thiem’s grand slam career has come to a close following his first round defeat to Ben Shelton at the US Open. Thiem, who won his sole major title at Flushing Meadows in 2020, lost 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to Shelton at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to bow out of the event. The 30-year-old was given a framed collage of all his best moments at the tournament from over the years as he said thank you to the New York crowd for the final time. "It's actually a really important moment for me because I had my greatest success of my career here on this court, in a weird 2020 in very strange and different circumstances (COVID-19 pandemic). I'm super happy that I got the chance to play my last US Open and I can spend some time with you guys," said Dominic Thiem. Thiem has been battling with a debilitating wrist injury since his US Open win and announced earlier in the year that he would be retiring from the sport. Despite the fact he’s retiring at an early age, Thiem doesn’t have “any regrets” for making the decision, as he never expected his career was “going to be that successful.” Thiem, who also reached three other major finals during his career, is hoping to finish his career at his home event in Vienna, Austria, in October.
