WADA Appeals Verdict Clearing Jannik Sinner Of Doping

00:01:18

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is appealing a decision that cleared world No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner of wrongdoing after he tested positive for Clostebol. Despite the International Tennis Integrity Agency ruling that Sinner bore no fault or negligence, WADA is appealing the decision and seeking a one- to two-year suspension for the 23-year-old. Sinner's positive tests were attributed to inadvertent contamination from treatment provided by his physiotherapist. The physiotherapist reportedly used a spray containing Clostebol to treat a wound on himself. WADA’s appeal comes after an independent tribunal accepted Sinner's explanation and allowed him to avoid suspension. The agency, however, disagrees with the tribunal's conclusions and is not seeking to disqualify any results, except for those already invalidated. Following the announcement of WADA's appeal, Sinner expressed "disappointment" and "surprise", noting the thoroughness of the previous hearings that favored him. As the appeal process continues, Sinner remains active in competition, recently winning the US Open and advancing in the China Open.
