Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka will play in the Miami Open despite the death of her boyfriend and former ice hockey player Konstantin Koltsov. Koltsov, who represented Belarus at the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2010, died at the age of 42 in an “apparent suicide” according to Miami Police. Koltsov also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins for three years, with the team offering “their deepest condolences” to his friends and family. Sabalenka is the second seed in Miami and was expected to enter the competition in the second round following a first-round bye. The world number two will play Spain’s Paula Bardosa in her opening game of the Miami Open and is aiming to win her 15th career title. Sabalenka lost her father Sergey in 2019 and described him as her “biggest motivation” after retaining her Australian Open crown this year. The 25-year-old also fulfilled a dream she shared with her father, who was 43 when he passed, which was to win two majors by the age of 25.
