Taylor Fritz defeated a frustrated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-3 on the opening day of the ATP Finals in Turin. Medvedev struggled to keep his cool throughout the encounter as Fritz recorded his 50th win of the year and kicked off the group stage of the event. Medvedev hit seven double faults in the opening set, including two back-to-back to give Fritz set point before double-faulting again, sparking an outburst by the Russian. The fourth seed smashed his racket against his seat and the ground, with his antics continuing into the following frame. Medvedev managed to muster a break point at the start of the second set, which he couldn’t dispatch as he smashed his backhand return into the net. Both Fritz and Medvedev failed to capitalize on further break points before the former finally broke through with a lob over his opponent. Medvedev then received a penalty for breaking a courtside microphone with his racket, with the 28-year-old being “frustrated” and “angry” “with myself, not with anyone.” The 2021 US Open champion was also booed by the crowd for holding his racket by the head while receiving Fritz’ serve, with the latter later serving out the match.
