Sinner Spoils Djokovic’s Hunt For 100th Career Title

00:01:14

Novak Djokovic will have to wait for his 100th ATP Tour title after he was defeated by Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final. Djokovic, who was defeated 7-6, 6-3 in the contest, was aiming to join Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors as players who’ve clocked 100 titles. “I have got to keep striving to make it happen somewhere in the near future. It's not a live-or-die type of goal for me, I think I've achieved all of my biggest goals in my career. Right now it's really about Slams and about seeing how far I can kind of push the bar for myself,” said Novak Djokovic. Sinner, whose season has been marred by an ongoing doping case, raced into a 4-0 lead in the opening set tiebreak before Djokovic won three of the next four points. However, Djokovic would put a backhanded effort into the net to give Sinner three set points, with the world number one dispatching the second of those opportunities to take the first set. Sinner would clinch a decisive break in the second set, with the 23-year-old going on to capture his seventh title of the season. The Italian, who clinched the Australian Open and US Open titles this year, has won 65 of his 71 matches in 2024.
