Frances Tiafoe has apologized for unleashing a cursed rant at an umpire following his third-round loss to Roman Safiullin at the Shanghai Masters. Tiafoe verbally attacked chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote after receiving a time violation before serving during the final-set tiebreaker. The 26-year-old, who received the penalty with the tiebreak tied at 5-5, claimed that he “tossed the ball up” and “was ready to serve.” Pinoargote, who had already penalized Tiafoe for a similar violation earlier in the match, wasn’t “buying” the player’s excuse and instructed him to take his second serve. Tiafoe would go on to lose the match, and after congratulating his opponent, he unleashed his tirade at Pinoargote, claiming that the umpire “f***** up the match.” The world number 17 could be heard saying, “F*** you. Seriously, man. F*** you. You f***ed me in the f***ing match,” but has since apologized for his actions. “I really apologize for the way I acted tonight. That is not who I am and not how I ever want to treat people. I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me and I’m extremely disappointed with how I handled the situation. That’s not acceptable behavior, and I want to apologize to the umpire, the tournament and the fans. I’ll be better for y’all,” said Frances Tiafoe on Instagram.
