David Goffin Slams French Open Fans' For Spitting At Him

00:01:14

Tennis star David Goffin criticized the French Open crowd after fans spat at him during his five-set victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Goffin, who described the behavior as "total disrespect," likened the atmosphere to football hooliganism. "Clearly, it goes too far, it’s total disrespect. It’s really too much. It’s becoming [like] football, soon there will be smoke bombs, hooligans and there will be fights in the stands. It’s starting to become ridiculous. Some people are there more to cause trouble than to create an atmosphere," David Goffin. The 33-year-old Belgian tennis player stated that he had to force himself to stay calm after someone "spat out their chewing gum" at him. He highlighted the need for stricter oversight, noting that such incidents are unique to Roland Garros. Goffin claims he is not alone in his complaints and that the French Open stands out from other grand slams in terms of fan behaviour. Novak Djokovic also experienced negative crowd behavior during his match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
